popefelix @ 2:41pm: Come to Inksome!
I don't know that I'm going to be moving over there, like some LJ users, because I do have a lot of friends here. That said, I'm going to try and post a lot more on Inksome, and it may well be that I post more there than I do here.

What's Inksome? Inksome is the LJ clone site that used to be Scribblit. [info]twocorpses decided she didn't want to continue with Scribblit, and so I took it over and renamed it to Inksome. So come on over! It's cheap! Only $25 for a year, or $10 for 3 months.

popefelix @ 9:07am: Civil War!
That's right, I said it. I'm calling for civil war, fought with squirt guns and water balloons, between Kansas and Missouri! Battles should be fought when it's hot outside, because wet and cold is just no fun. :)

Come and squirt for the honor of your state! Who's with me?

stinerman, posting in debian @ 7:08pm: New X kills VTs
Friends,

After updating my xserver-xorg and associated packages to the newest version in testing (7.3+10), my ttys or VTs or whatever you want to call them no longer work. That is to say, a CTRL+ALT+F1 doesn't get me away from my desktop.

I'm running an ATI Radeon 9600, but using the VESA driver didn't fix the problem, so I don't think it's a driver issue.

Thoughts?

Update: Apparently something got mixed up with respect to xlibs-data/x11-kbd-utils; I was missing all of the binaries in the latter. For posterity, see this debianHELP page.

annie22, posting in charleston_sc @ 3:13pm: getting rid of furniture
Hey Charlestonians! :)

I have a quick question about getting rid of furniture.  I have a couch (~6 years old, still in ok condition) and a futon (~1.5 years old) that I won't be taking with me when I move.  I would like to give them to Goodwill or a similar group.  I know in my hometown, there was a truck that you could call (veteran's, i think), and they would come and pick up bigger items.  I searched online for this and found a group that does this, but it is close to the upstate, and that won't work :)  Any ideas are appreciated!  If this doesn't work, I'll freecycle or put them up on craigslist.

Also, update to my previous moving question:  I ended up hiring the movers from Pittsburgh who moved me down here.  They make a lot of trips from FL, so they're going to pick me up on the way back from one of those!

Hope y'all have a great weekend!

zerozerovoid, posting in charleston_sc @ 2:33pm: I don't know how to not make this sound pathetic, but... where do you guys actually go to meet people?

I've been here about a year via the Navy and I have few to zero civilian friends. I just turned 21 but I'm still not huge on bars. I go record shopping a lot (52.5 mostly) and sometimes go to shows at Music Farm, but those aren't exactly places where you just talk to people and meet them.

I don't think I'm socially retarded or weird, I just never got around to exploring Charleston much. I go downtown every once in awhile, hit up the beach every couple of weeks when the weather permits, and... well, that's about it.

So how did you guys get to be socially established in the area?

nogbogfrog @ 12:05pm: Almost a year ago I made the following post announcing my departure from the software department.

http://nogbogfrog.livejournal.com/204921.html

Well starting on the 5th, I will be rejoining the software department. It was an interesting experiment in a different development and production environment. It helped me realize what I liked in terms of tech, and in terms of teamwork. I am going back to the software department with a lot of knowledge gained, and plenty of understanding about myself. I am going back happily!

scoundreldays, posting in charleston_sc @ 10:58pm: looking for store recommendations
I'll be in Charleston this Saturday and Sunday, and I'd appreciate any suggestions for music stores (specifically those that sell vinyl) & maybe any good thrift stores ("good" meaning selections beyond clothes). Thanks in advance!

brad @ 11:37pm: C++
I've been writing a bunch of C++ lately, both inside and outside of work. Really, once you learn what the gcc error messages actually mean, then it's smooth sailing. My mean time between bugging [info]evan continues to drop ... a little.

I regularly bounce now between C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, Perl, and Sawzall. I wish I could say something more profound than that they all suck in their own special ways. (I suppose the cheery angle is that they're all beautiful snowflakes too, but...)

Actually JavaScript is almost the least annoying, from a language perspective. JavaScript with the whole DOM and browser crap is a whole different story ... but embedded JavaScript is great.

I wrote something in plain C the other day and besides being kinda nostalgically quaint, it kinda blew. I eagerly await rewriting it in C++.

Back to C++ fun....

popefelix @ 9:41pm: Vehicle update
Yes, I know I just posted one. But now it's time for another, damn it all to Xenu.

In our last thrilling episode, the shifter on Stu had broken (specifically, the cheap plastic bushing that connects the shift cable to the shift lever broke. This problem is apparently endemic to Saturns from '91 - '02). Yesterday I got the stainless steel replacement part in the mail, and decided to attach it. I followed the seller's instructions, removing the remaining bits of the old bushing, swabbing the area with acetone, attaching the bushing with J-B Weld (the real stuff, not J-B Kwik) and then clamping it and letting it sit overnight. Tonight I went through the rest of the installation process, as it had been almost 24 hours, and the recommended cure time for the J-B Weld was only 15 hours. I fought with the E-clip for a good fifteen minutes, but eventually managed to install it. "Hooray!", I thought. "I can get myself to work tomorrow!" (You may well ask, "What about Arcadia?" I'm getting there) Slightly prudent soul that I am, though, I thought I had better test the shifter out. So I pushed in the clutch and wiggled the shifter around a bit, going through all the gears, and right as I went into reverse (note that the car was off, so I wasn't going anywhere), the bushing pops right off. I called the guy I bought the bushing from (he offers free technical support), but he was not around.

That would have been it for the night, but I recalled reading about an IT guy who had a similar issue with his Saturn. He fixed his shifter with some stripped wires out of a length of Cat 5. Now, I've thrown all my crappy Cat 5 away, but I do have zip-ties. And the bushing itself is physically sound. So I put the bushing back on to the ball-thingy on the end of the shifter and zip-tied the hell out of it. :) It seems to work OK, but I'm still wary, so I'm not going to drive it tomorrow. Maybe Thursday.

Now, I promised to talk about Arcadia, and so I shall. Ever since my abortive trip to Chambana, Arcadia has been running roughly. I had hoped to nurse her along by charging her battery every night until the new R/R came. This was not to be the case, it seems, as Arcadia started running really rough on the way home. She died several times on the way home. I push-started her (or just used my momentum) each time until one time when I couldn't push-start her. So I parked her on the street at 66th, just off of Ward Parkway, with a note bungeed to her trunk bag explaining the situation and giving my number. Local 'Maggot Dan Kunkel and his truck will be helping me haul her home Thursday, as tomorrow I have EIR and I can't miss it.

So I have no working vehicles again. This sucks ass.

I realize that this is due in some part to my own bullheadedness. If I had just shelled out the $400 that Hank's Auto wanted, Stu would be running. If I had taken Arcadia to a mechanic, I'd have the new R/R in by now. But I want "the knowing and the doing" of these things, so I guess this is the price I pay.

Of course, I could have paid more for a different car and maybe not had to deal with Stu's issues at all. But hindsight is 20/20, I guess.
popefelix @ 8:02pm: Arcadia has broken down
I think the R/R has finally died the final death. Anybody local want to make some dough and help me haul her back home? She's parked on 66th, just off of Ward.
